Here you will find answers to common questions. If you have questions that aren’t answered here, contact me, and I may add it to the list.
How can I commission you for one or more of your services?
You can commission me by accessing the Client Agreement page, reading the Terms and Conditions listed there, then accepting those Terms and Conditions by completely filling out the form located at the bottom of the page. I will then contact you with either a request for more information or an order confirmation.
Do you work with digital copy or hard copy?
I work with Microsoft Word, marking documents with the Track Changes feature. I can also mark documents in Apache OpenOffice, using the Show Changes feature in that program as well. I would be happy to work with hard copy; however, in order to keep costs down and prices reasonable, I will require clients to print hard copies exceeding 5,000 words and mail them to me with a SASE included for returning it to the client.
What types of projects do you accept?
I accept all types of projects for proofreading and copy-editing including but not limited to: manuscripts, partial manuscripts, and chapters, as well as other types of non-fiction and business documents such as essays, papers, theses, dissertations, letters, pamphlets, brochures, newsletters, and even websites. For development editing and beta reading critiques, I only accept fiction projects such as manuscripts, partial manuscripts, and chapters. I may accept non-fiction projects along the lines of essays and articles but only if it is a topic with which I am knowledgeable and comfortable. Acceptance of these proposals will be on a case by case basis.
Acceptance of new projects is also based on my availability in regards to current projects and the client’s willingness to wait when there is a waiting period before I become available.
In some cases, I may decline a project if I determine that the project needs more work than I am willing to invest in it; for example, if I have been commissioned to edit a document for development and determine that the document would benefit not from a developmental edit but instead from rewriting, which is a service that I do not offer. In such cases, I will turn down the project and recommend that the client seek out a professional ghostwriter to assist in rewriting the document.
*I reserve the right to decline any project for any reason.*
What types of payment do you accept?
My preferred method of payment is PayPal using my editing email address, firstname.lastname@example.org.
If the client is a resident of the U.S., I will also accept personal checks by mail. Details of to whom personal checks will be made out and where to send them will be discussed in private emails only. As a result of the risk of non-sufficient funds with personal checks, I will only accept them prior to commencing work and will only begin work once the check(s) clear unless prior arrangements have been made.
If neither PayPal nor personal checks are an option for a client, I am willing to accept money transfers through Western Union. However, I am unfamiliar with the procedures involved and would prefer this option to remain a last resort.
What is the time frame for the completion of projects?
Time frames for each project will be discussed and decided upon before work begins. The client will disclose any deadlines prior to the start of work, excepting extenuating circumstances in which a deadline may arise that has not been previously discussed. I will do my best to accommodate deadlines in either case.
Time frames depend on several factors: scope of the project, amount of time available for me to work on it during any given week, client deadlines, other projects with pressing deadlines. Generally speaking, proofreading takes the least amount of time, while development editing and beta reading critiques take the most amount of time. Individual chapters can be finished rather quickly while entire manuscripts may take some time. It is difficult to give broad estimates about the time involved in a project; therefore, time frames will be discussed and decided for each project.
In some cases and in regards to some services, I may be able to work out an express service for a higher fee. It depends on the type of project and whether I will be able to commit to that project at that time. Please contact me to negotiate such a project.
Are there certain genres that you prefer over others?
In terms of the proofreading and editing services that I offer, I will proofread any genre, and the same basically goes for copy-editing. There are always exceptions, but these will be handled on a case by case basis.
In terms of development editing and beta reading critiques, I do prefer certain genres out of the necessity of being able to perform the work I have been commissioned to do. I prefer fantasy (all types), paranormal, science fiction, and gay romance, and I especially like when there is some combination of several genres. I also like period pieces. I will likely decline projects involving biographical, autobiographical, and/or non-fiction writing for development editing and beta reading critiques.
In terms of book reviews, I prefer the above listed genres, but I will read and review just about anything. I prefer fiction, but my reading interests are broad enough to accommodate other genres as well.
Are there books that you will not review?
I will not review books that are solely pornographic and lack any redeeming value in the form of exceptional writing, well-developed characters, and an intricate plot aside from the explicit content. I am not condemning such books; I simply will not review them.
For a complete list of acceptable and unacceptable books to be reviewed as well as the Book Review Policy, please see the Book Reviews page.
How can I request a book review from you?
You can request a book review using this Book Review Request Form.
Do you offer discounts? Can arrangements be made for a discounted rate if I wish to hire you for ongoing services?
I do offer several discounts for students, educators, U.S. military servicemen and women, and for referrals. Please see Pricing for more details.
As I am interested in clients who desire to cultivate long-term business relationships, I am willing to negotiate a discounted rate for the pledge of a commitment to provide me with plenty of future projects. Please contact me with your proposal.
